8 Simple Job Search Tips

We recently published an article based upon an email I received from a co-worker titled, It's Time to Prepare for a Layoff. This article served to be a reality check and alert us on things we need to have in place just in case we get that shocking call to the HR department.  What was even more ironic is that I received a message from a friend stating that after reading that article in the morning, she was laid off that same afternoon.  … Continue Reading

8 Tips to Deal With a Job Loss

It’s a chilling reality. The fact that those we know, love and work with are losing their jobs as companies adjust to the current economic climate. To illustrate this point, I've posted a snippet of an email I received from a co-worker a couple of days ago:

“Torrey, my current position is being eliminated and I will no longer be with the company. Can you help me with job search sites and networking opportunities?  I really appreciate any help you can provide."

Take a moment and put yourself in this person's shoes.  One day, your life is great.  The next, you're getting called to the HR department and they are telling you how the company is restructuring. And this begins your job search.  This can happen to any of us at any time.  Whether you are the sole earner or in a two income household, a job loss can cause a lot of stress.  … Continue Reading

5 Reasons Every Man Needs A Mentor

5 Reasons Every Man Needs A Mentor

I had a very in depth conversation with a slightly older man a couple of days ago about the direction of my company, which is in its infancy stages.  The conversation, coupled with his advice, brought something to light that I failed to consider.

The gentleman I had this conversation with was one of my two mentors.  I came into contact with what would turn out to be my first mentor while obtaining my undergraduate degree.  At that time, I can't say I was even seeking a mentor. But over time, I realized that this was a person going where I wanted to go.  Thus, just like driving directions, you get as much information on how to travel from point A to your final destination. … Continue Reading

Be A Confident Man in Social Settings

As a part of my day job, I attend tons of social events. From luncheons to dinners. From parties to religious functions. And one thing I am seeing more and more is men shying away from interacting with others. There are some that are looking at their watch for the duration of the event. Others text on smartphones while some guys stay at a bar all evening. I've even seen men cling to their women like she's their mother. What a sad sight to see!

I’d venture to guess that we all know a man or two that can walk in to any setting and totally “wow” people. This guy seems to know the right things to say at the right times. People are attracted and intrigued by this gentleman.

Most men want to have that same ability. There are numerous advantages to being able to control any social setting. They include but aren’t limited to outcomes of networking and even attracting women.

Unfortunately, many men would rather disappear in the corner until the function is over. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Being a more confident man in social setting is not hard at all. But it does take a bit of work on your part. Here are a few suggestions to being a confident and self-assured man: … Continue Reading

They say it’s the backbone of the nation’s economy. Others call it the American Dream. But regardless of your thoughts about it, being the owner of a small business can be both rewarding and challenging.

As well as having a full-time job, writing for this blog and being hubby/daddy, I also own a small business. I’m not going to go into details about it because this forum isn’t for promoting the business.

Since starting the business in May, my partner and I have been very encouraged by our success. We’ve worked really hard to make our brand trustworthy in the eyes of those who may be seeking services we provide. And in turn, we’ve landed some high-profile clients and provided a variety of services for them.

But through all the success and challenges, there are 10 key things that I learned from starting this small business that I hope will be helpful for our readers. … Continue Reading
