Etiquette 101: Rules of Engagement at the Gym

I dislike the big box gyms like Bally’s, and 24 Hour Fitness. Maybe I’m jaded by terrible experiences, though. But half the people there are doing everything else but working out.
It is my feeling that it wouldn’t hurt to make everyone attend some sort of gym orientation. Understanding how to best utilize the gym would no doubt make everyone’s experience a better one.
Sine the new year is right on our tails and several of us will be renewing our commitment to fitness as a resolution, I thought I’d list a few gym etiquette tips. Consider it a common courtesy code that will help all of us.
Don’t hog the equipment – Ever seen that guy spending 1 ½ hours on the bench press machine? Yea, me too! Be courteous to others who are waiting for your equipment. Just because you sit your gym bag next to the machine doesn’t make it yours.
Re-rack the free weights – Show some respect to those in the gym by re-racking your weights when you are done. Leaving 600 lbs on the bar and moving on to another machine is just plain rude and pisses everyone off. Take the time to rack you weight in the right place.
Don’t offer exercise advice unless asked – Everybody in the gym has some workout advice. Some is well-meaning, others are just to show off how much they know. Don’t give yours unless someone asks for it or are obviously endangering themselves. 
Wipe off equipment after using – With all the viruses going around, take the time to be sanitary. Wipe off each machine you use when you’re done. Nobody wants to deal with your leftover sweat. Most gyms provide sanitary clothes and sprays.
If you must talk on the phone, do so quietly – Bluetooths are a prime culprit in this. It gives too much access to those who talk on the phone in the gym. If you must talk on your cell phone, do so quietly. Interrupting others around you by loud talking surely will not be appreciated.
Reserve the flirting for later – So many guys walk around the gym and gawk at the ladies working out. Surely they don’t want your eyes burning a hole through them.  Give them an opportunity to work out and if you are attracted to them, do so outside or something.
Don’t slam you weights down unless necessary – Self explanatory but dropping your weights can and will break everyone’s concentration. It's understandable that some exercises warrant it.  But doing so just because is distracting.
Get a spotter, if necessary – If you are trying to max out or just unsure about how much you can lift, get a spotter. If working out alone, simply ask someone in the gym. The last thing we need is a bar full of weights on your neck.
Talk to a trainer – If you have no idea what you are doing, take the time to get with a trainer of gym employee.  Often times, people waste time on machines becaue they don't know what they are doing.  Talking to a professional can make your workout go much quicker and smoother.
Exercise is important for all of us. But being respectful of your fellow patrons will set you apart as the gentlemen you aspire to be!

    thank you for this sir. everything you talked about i've noticed at the gym and i hate it. i work out at aspen here in tulsa and it's becoming the place to be seen and i hate it. people need to realize that some people are at the gym for the sole purpose of working out and not to be seen, get picked up, or showing off.

      True, Kyra. That is a main reason many people simply do not go to the gym. I had a hard time with people stopping to chat with me while I’m working out. I started taking my Ipod and don’t have that problem anymore.
