Top 10 Basketball Movies

Follow Torance on Twitter

Growing up in Chicago, it was inevitable that I would gravitate toward basketball. For many gentlemen I know, basketball was the first sport they grew to love watching and playing. The fact is basketball transcends what happens on the court. It was and is a way of life and culture for so many black men. The close relationship that basketball has with music, particularly hip hop is amazing. Just think about how many hoopers want to be rappers and vice versa. Fans, in the meantime, dream of being both.

Basketball is an awesome game because it's something you can play alone or with other players. The only thing better than watching or playing in an actual game is watching a movie about basketball.

Hollywood has made several attempts to showcase the sport in different lights. From comedies to dramas to documentaries to animation, it is so hard to merge sports (especially basketball) and movies. As a huge movie buff and b-ball fan, I am pretty critical when I see a basketball scene in a movie that just looks terrible. Sometimes the players/actors look as if they just learned to play last week.

So to find out what's is the best basketball movie of all time, I decided to create a top 10 list. My criteria (for those judging at home) included:
  • The movie's plot
  • Believability of the basketball scenes

So with no further ado, let's take a look at the 10 best basketball movies of all time. … Continue Reading

The NBA Trade Deadline passed yesterday and we had a healthy share of activity. It's a bit surprising so much took place because of the pending labor negotiations. But this time of year has always made for great chatter amongst friends and in the barbershops.
I thought I’d share with you my winners and losers of the NBA Trade Season . Since we're in the middle of the 2010 Winter Olympics, I have chosen to award the winners gold, silver and bronze medals. The losers, well they're losers, so they get no special recognition. Here we go! … Continue Reading

Black Men: Make Your Health A Top Priority

January 25, 2010 Health & Sports 1 Comment

 stethoscope

When's the last time you've been to the doctor?  For most men, that's a question that is not easily answered.  It's no secret that we can be very hardheaded when it comes to visiting our physician.  I'm no different when it comes to this topic.

As I make my way though my 30s, it is very apparent that my health is now more important that it was when I was in my 20s.  And that's no surprise because there is a sense of invincibility when you're younger and taking life by its tail. Maybe you still feel invincible.

But as I sit today, 31 years old, a parent of an eight year old son and a six month old daughter, I really must now think of my well-being as a matter of obligation.  This responsibility is to myself, my wife, family and friends.

As black men, our attention to our health leaves much to be desired. Black men's health is the worse among any racial and gender group. For example, check out a few black men health statistics: … Continue Reading

NBA Slam Dunk Contest: How to Fix It

January 20, 2010 Health & Sports No Comments

I used to be a huge NBA fan.  I mean huge.  I'd watch every game I could.  And the highlight of the NBA year would be the NBA All-Star Weekend.  It was like a second Christmas on Saturday night.  We all know the 3 point shootout was nice but it was merely the warm-up fight for the main bout: The Slam Dunk Contest!

But now I feel like I have "good ole' day" syndrome. You know what I mean.  That's when nothing today is as good as it was back in the day.  But I know I'm not alone when I say that the Slam Dunk Contest is as old and stale as a Ritz cracker left out for a month. … Continue Reading

Etiquette 101: Rules of Engagement at the Gym

Etiquette 101: Rules of Engagement at the Gym
I dislike the big box gyms like Bally’s, and 24 Hour Fitness. Maybe I’m jaded by terrible experiences, though. But half the people there are doing everything else but working out.
It is my feeling that it wouldn’t hurt to make everyone attend some sort of gym orientation. Understanding how to best utilize the gym would no doubt make everyone’s experience a better one.
Sine the new year is right on our tails and several of us will be renewing our commitment to fitness as a resolution, I thought I’d list a few gym etiquette tips. Consider it a common courtesy code that will help all of us. … Continue Reading

 Stress

I would say that most of us deal with stress. As our readership is mostly 25-44 year olds, we all probably deal with stress from our jobs, home, kids and bills. Stress should be taken seriously because it can lead us to find comfort in unhealthy ways. Many when battling stress turn to food, alcohol and smoking.

I can definitely say I deal with stress every day. I have an eight year old son, a three month old daughter, a full time job and a blossoming entrepreneurial venture. So it’s safe to assume that I deal with my fair share of stress. Because of that, I am always looking for simple and easy ways to better manage my life and keep stress to a minimum.

Will your life ever be absent of stress? Probably not. In fact, I don’t think I would want to live without some stress. I think that my best work comes from being stressed a bit. Stress can push us to limits we never thought we could reach. And what fun would life be without some challenges? But when stress gets too much to bear, it can be detrimental. … Continue Reading

Athletes: Role Models or Just Entertainers?

August 17, 2009 Health & Sports 15 Comments

Today, it’s becoming harder to tell the difference between ESPN’s SportsCenter or the police blotter and Access Hollywood.  Our athletes and sports figures have become much bigger focuses because of varying legal issues and moral indiscretions.  Recent weeks and months have spotlighted a number of sports figures that have had off the court/field problems as  Michael Vick, Rick Pitino, Dante Stallworth, Steve McNair, Brandon Marshall and Alex Rodriguez just to name a few.

Whether it be breaking the law, infidelity, or steroids allegations, the increase in media outlets does a great job putting a bigger emphasis on these issues. That gives more children to learn about the other side of their favorite sports stars.

If you recall, Nike and Charles Barkley created a controversial commercial about how athletes are not role models in 1993.  Check it out below.

In the commercial, Charles claims that he (and all athletes) are paid to entertain and help their team while parents should be the role models.

So this week’s Question of the Week is:

Are athletes role models?

We’d like to get your take on this question.  Should we view athletes merely as entertainers or do they have a greater responsibility that goes beyond the sport? We look forward to your responses.  Let us know what you think by leaving a comment below.

5 Amazingly Simple Ways You Can Eat Healthier

In today’s world, we should all strive to eat and live better. What we eat affects our bodies in different ways. It’s important to understand that living a healthy lifestyle consists of not only exercise but also eating better.

Guys, we have so many excuses on why we can’t eat as healthy as we want or exercise as much as we need. But the bottom line is if something is important enough, you will do what it takes to get it done. A prime example of this is when I decided to overhaul my diet. I haven’t eaten pork or beef for nearly 12 years.

I decided to eliminate those meats from my diet because I thought I could take advantage of other sources of proteins such as chicken, fish and nuts. But not all men will want to make that commitment, but if you do, believe me, IT CAN BE DONE!

Remember, reaching a goal of having healthy eating habits can be a tough, long process and can’t be done overnight.  But to get you going, I’m going to list 5 amazingly simple ways to get you eating healthier. These few steps can get the Average Joe jump-started and feeling much better.

1. Slow Down on Fast Food
Try to cut down on the fast food. You may try to designate certain days such as 2 or 3 times a week instead of 4.

For the fellas who go out for lunch (you know who you are), try bringing lunch or ordering healthier choices on the menu (i.e., instead of the fried chicken sandwich, go grilled).

In addition, some of us think our lifestyle is too busy for preparing meals at home, but such is not the case. Try planning meals for the week and it may take the hassle out of eating at home.

2. Doggie Bag It
Just because they serve it to you does not mean you have to eat it all. Typically, a normal adult portion of meat should be the size of a fist.

Society has told us that if we pay a lot for our meals, we should get larger portions. So what has the trend been?  Come on, you’ve seen the restaurant commercials with the huge heaping plates of food.  Generally in a restaurant, we are served way too much food.  Since that’s the case, just get a doggie bag to take food home with you instead of eating it all in one sitting. You will feel a lot better after dinner with the family. Think of it this way: Food is energy so you shouldn’t feel like you want to lie down after eating.

3. Water it Down
You can always drink a glass of water before eating which can limit that hungry feeling. Also try to eliminate soda and swap some of your sugary juice drinks for water. A good way also can be to add flavor packets to your bottled water because they don’t contain as much sugar as soft drinks or juices.

4. Lite is Alright
This is for people who may have a few alcoholic drinks every now and then. If you are a beer drinker, the lite beers are always a great option when trying to cut calories. Drinking wine is also a great alternative and you won’t feel as bad in the morning. When it comes to alcoholic drinks, try to stay away from the fruity drinks such as piña coladas and margaritas. They have an enormous amount of calories in the syrup mixers. Your best choice would probably be straight drinks or diet sodas mixed with them.

5.Try Not to Fry
Whatever food it may be that you love to eat fried, try an alternative. Turn that fried chicken into a baked option or even fire up the grill. There are several recipes out there for oven-fried chicken which can be just as tasty. If the kids love french fries, you can oven bake them and get the same results but healthier and the kids still love them.

There you go. Those are 5 quick suggestions all of us guys can take and make a difference with our eating habits. That’s not that hard, is it?
