Friday Rewind: Cross Colours, TLC and Hollywood Shuffle

February 26, 2010 Entertainment No Comments

Ever sit back and reminisce about the good (and not so good) 'ole days? Us too! So we decided to share some of our favorite old school memories with you. Introducing Flashback Fridays!

Torance: The year was 1990 and the hottest clothes on the street were Cross Colours. I was about 12 or 13 years old and I vividly remember my favorite pair of shorts being Cross Colours. They were extremely long and baggy and a very bright green (I also had a yellow pair). That summer I wore those shorts all around Chicago! I wore those at least a year or so before the trend finally was put to rest. All throughout my neighborhood and school you couldn't go a minute without seeing Cross Colours on somebody! And as loud as those clothes were, the message was just as loud and powerful. … Continue Reading

Top 10 Basketball Movies

Follow Torance on Twitter

Growing up in Chicago, it was inevitable that I would gravitate toward basketball. For many gentlemen I know, basketball was the first sport they grew to love watching and playing. The fact is basketball transcends what happens on the court. It was and is a way of life and culture for so many black men. The close relationship that basketball has with music, particularly hip hop is amazing. Just think about how many hoopers want to be rappers and vice versa. Fans, in the meantime, dream of being both.

Basketball is an awesome game because it's something you can play alone or with other players. The only thing better than watching or playing in an actual game is watching a movie about basketball.

Hollywood has made several attempts to showcase the sport in different lights. From comedies to dramas to documentaries to animation, it is so hard to merge sports (especially basketball) and movies. As a huge movie buff and b-ball fan, I am pretty critical when I see a basketball scene in a movie that just looks terrible. Sometimes the players/actors look as if they just learned to play last week.

So to find out what's is the best basketball movie of all time, I decided to create a top 10 list. My criteria (for those judging at home) included:
  • The movie's plot
  • Believability of the basketball scenes

So with no further ado, let's take a look at the 10 best basketball movies of all time. … Continue Reading

Eric Roberson: Music Artists You Should Know

Listening to the radio these days gives me a headache.  It seems like the songs that are in heavy rotation all sound the same. The songs are full of clever sexual innuendos that are acceptable enough to get radio play. This is one reason I find it necessary to travel with my IPod at all times.

Part of the fun for me is discovering talented music artists that are not in the mainstream.  I really like finding artists that make it obvious they enjoy their craft. Too many artists appear to be in the music business purely for the fame and riches. I'm afraid a lot of those folks dominate commercial radio today.

When having conversations with my friends, I share with them my latest music finds. I thought to myself, why not do essentially the same thing here on Men's Playbook?  So we've decide to start a recurring series of articles called Music Artists You Should Know to bring to light musicians that the average music fan may not know a lot about.

Our first artist featured has grown to become my personal favorite R&B artist: Eric Roberson. … Continue Reading

Three Celebrities Tiger Woods Can Learn From

Three Celebrities Tiger Woods Can Learn From
In our last article, we talked about the Tiger Woods cheating deal and how regardless of his celebrity status, he’s merely a human prone to make errors just like us.
But the fact is that Tiger Woods has never been in a worse spot than he is in today. He cheated on his wife. Coupled with the fact that he has numerous endorsements (none have dropped him as a spokesperson), he plays the ultimate “gentleman’s game”. Golf is absent of referees and is revered for honesty and self-admittance when mistakes are made.
Regardless of his desire for the public not the jump to unsubstantiated conclusions, he is guilty in the court of public opinion. He’s not the first nor will he be the last public figure to find himself in a pickle.
The problem is that each moment that Tiger hides from the public that he scolded for invading his privacy, the worse sentiments can get towards him.  Has he broken the law? No. But in many instances the court of public opinion can be much worse because he doesn't have the right to a fair trial and he has us to be his judge and jury.
Can Tiger fix his reputation? I'm sure he can. But if he wants to do that, he should take a look at a few celebs that have been down this road before. … Continue Reading

If you are a Facebook Fan of ours, you know that on Fridays, we ask our 322 peeps (as of this writing) a random light-hearted question to lead us into the weekend. That gives us and our readers an opportunity to interact outside of the blog setting.

I was going to post another article for today and pose the question, “What are some trends that have to stop?” to our Facebook Fans. But the more I thought about it, I had to turn it into a MP post. So for our core readers, this may be off the beaten path, but humor us and read along anyway. … Continue Reading
