Personal Finance Basics: Spend Less Than You Earn

Follow Torrey on Twitter

Bad money habits cause tons of stress for any gentleman. They can lead to avoiding phone calls from bill collectors, arguments with your wife and the inability make headway with personal goals. There are hundreds of so-called experts with late-night infomercials and books with the "magic formula" to help you escape your money woes. But in my experience, there is not any magic or little-know secret to personal finance.

My grandfather told me a long time ago that anything worth having is worth working for. That's a statement I believe applies to all things in life, including the pursuit of financial independence. If you begin your journey to a better personal finance situation, you'll be much better off for it.  Additionally, you will be a role model (whether you know it or not) for so many others who are afraid of being real when it comes to their true financial outlook or just confused with no knowledge of where to start.

So to help all of us be better men in all aspects of life, we wanted to feature some personal finance basics that lay the foundation for financial independence.

The first tenet we will look at is a five word statement that seems like a "duh". But doesn't it seem as if the simplest things seem to always trip us up.  Read moreRead more

Why Losing Your Job Could Be The Best Thing Ever!

Follow Torrey on Twitter

I can't imagine anything much more shocking to a man's system than losing a job.  Losing a job can leave us feeling betrayed and worthless. So many of us identify ourselves with what we do for a living and what we obtain with our earnings.

The reality of each of us getting that unpleasant news is more and more practical.  Our turbulent economy has contributed to an unemployment rate consistently hovering around 10%. With that many people out of work, we have recently provided simple tips on how to deal with job loss and finding a job.

There are some people who are determined to use their job loss as a launching pad for something better and/or more meaningful. These folks adopt the familiar saying, "when life gives you lemons, make lemonade". I recently came across a very interesting and thought provoking movie that highlight a few of these people.

Lemonade is a movie about 16 advertising professionals who lost their jobs. The reality of the job loss gave them the courage to follow their true passions. Read moreRead more

8 Simple Job Search Tips

We recently published an article based upon an email I received from a co-worker titled, It's Time to Prepare for a Layoff. This article served to be a reality check and alert us on things we need to have in place just in case we get that shocking call to the HR department.  What was even more ironic is that I received a message from a friend stating that after reading that article in the morning, she was laid off that same afternoon.  Read moreRead more

8 Tips to Deal With a Job Loss

It’s a chilling reality. The fact that those we know, love and work with are losing their jobs as companies adjust to the current economic climate. To illustrate this point, I've posted a snippet of an email I received from a co-worker a couple of days ago:

“Torrey, my current position is being eliminated and I will no longer be with the company. Can you help me with job search sites and networking opportunities?  I really appreciate any help you can provide."

Take a moment and put yourself in this person's shoes.  One day, your life is great.  The next, you're getting called to the HR department and they are telling you how the company is restructuring. And this begins your job search.  This can happen to any of us at any time.  Whether you are the sole earner or in a two income household, a job loss can cause a lot of stress.  Read moreRead more

5 Reasons Every Man Needs A Mentor

I had a very in depth conversation with a slightly older man a couple of days ago about the direction of my company, which is in its infancy stages.  The conversation, coupled with his advice, brought something to light that I failed to consider.

The gentleman I had this conversation with was one of my two mentors.  I came into contact with what would turn out to be my first mentor while obtaining my undergraduate degree.  At that time, I can't say I was even seeking a mentor. But over time, I realized that this was a person going where I wanted to go.  Thus, just like driving directions, you get as much information on how to travel from point A to your final destination. Mistakes I Have Made With Money

Money Mistakes
Follow Torrey on Twitter
Personal finance is something that I’ve become more diligent of as the years have gone by. It’s hard to believe that 10 years ago and being 21 years-old, I had no clue about how your money can be so hard to get and keep.
But with 10 years under my belt and a lot more knowledge, I can see the importance of being financially responsible. Some of my awakening has been a result of maturity, having a family and seeing mistakes made by others.
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result. I often think about that when I see collegues and friends making poor financial decisions.
So to hopefully help those who are struggling with money, I am going to highlight six money mistakes I’ve made and learned from. Read moreRead more

Small Business

Follow Torrey on Twitter

They say it’s the backbone of the nation’s economy. Others call it the American Dream. But regardless of your thoughts about it, being the owner of a small business can be both rewarding and challenging.

As well as having a full-time job, writing for this blog and being hubby/daddy, I also own a small business. I’m not going to go into details about it because this forum isn’t for promoting the business.

Since starting the business in May, my partner and I have been very encouraged by our success. We’ve worked really hard to make our brand trustworthy in the eyes of those who may be seeking services we provide. And in turn, we’ve landed some high-profile clients and provided a variety of services for them.

But through all the success and challenges, there are 10 key things that I learned from starting this small business that I hope will be helpful for our readers. Read moreRead more

Before I got married a few years ago, my mentor and I were having a discussion about various situations in marriage. After tossing around several scenarios, we began talking about "What if my wife made more money than me?"

Coincidentally, while I was recently browsing the internet the other day, I came across an article about women who outearn their husbands on Forbes.com (published June 12). It brought me back to that conversation over three years ago.  The article is really a great read and I hope you hop over and check it out. Read moreRead more
